Hospital Doors vs Commercial Doors: Why They Are Not Interchangeable

On a floor plan, a ward door and an office door look similar. In daily service they live completely different lives, and using a commercial door in a hospital environment usually shows its limits within the first year.

The first difference is traffic. Hospital doors are opened by beds, wheelchairs, meal carts and equipment trolleys from early morning to midnight - often with impacts at the leading edge. Medical steel doors respond with reinforced edges, stainless kick plates and high-cycle hinges rated for hundreds of thousands of operations.

The second difference is hygiene. Hospitals disinfect surfaces daily with aggressive agents. Commercial door finishes are not formulated for this; medical doors use antibacterial powder coatings or HPL laminates that tolerate wiping and keep flush surfaces without dirt traps.

The third difference is airflow. Operating rooms, ICUs and isolation suites depend on controlled pressure. Only hermetic doors - with full-perimeter sealing and engineered closing force - hold these regimes. No standard commercial automatic door provides documented airtightness.

Acoustics and privacy add further requirements. Wards need doors with drop seals and perimeter gaskets to protect rest, while imaging suites need shielding that no commercial product offers.

Compliance is the final gap. Hospital projects typically require fire ratings as tested assemblies, airtightness reports, and radiation shielding documents. Commercial doors rarely arrive with the paperwork a healthcare authority expects.

The practical conclusion: for ORs, ICUs, imaging rooms and corridors, specify purpose-built medical doors. Commercial-grade doors remain acceptable only for administrative offices inside the hospital.

Fenghe focuses exclusively on medical door products - hermetic doors, ward doors, lead-lined doors and accessories - engineered for hospital duty cycles and documentation requirements.
