How to Choose Hermetic Doors for Operating Rooms: A Buyer's Guide

Hermetic sliding doors are the single most visible piece of the operating room envelope. They are opened hundreds of times a day, cleaned with aggressive agents, and expected to hold pressure regimes that protect patients. Choosing well at procurement stage avoids years of maintenance issues.

Start with sealing. A genuine hermetic door seals the full perimeter: brush seals on both sides, a labyrinth or compression detail at the meeting edge, and a raised bottom rail that the leaf closes onto. Ask the supplier how leakage is measured and whether airtightness test reports are available per shipment.

The operator is the second critical component. Brushless 24V DC motors with belt drives have become the standard because they run quietly, dissipate heat well and tolerate the high cycle counts of a surgical department. Check the rated leaf weight - a fully glazed or lead-lined leaf can weigh twice as much as a standard one.

Hygiene details matter as much as mechanics. The leaf surface should be flush, free of exposed screws, and resistant to hospital disinfectants. Vision panels must be double glazed and sealed into the leaf, not surface-mounted. Handles should be stainless steel, ideally elbow operated in sterile zones.

Control options shape daily workflow. Radar sensors suit corridors, while hands-free elbow or foot switches belong in sterile zones. Confirm that the controller supports access control, interlocks and fire alarm interfaces if your design requires them.

Documentation separates professional suppliers from traders. A manufacturer should provide drawings, airtightness test reports, electrical schematics and spare parts lists. For projects using C-arms, the door's radiation shielding package also needs type-test documentation.

Finally, look at customization capability. Opening widths above 1500mm, special heights, lead lining and unusual finishes should be routine requests for a medical door factory, not exceptions. Suppliers who only resell standard sizes will struggle with real hospital projects.

Fenghe manufactures hermetic sliding and swing doors for operating rooms, ICUs and isolation suites, with OEM sizing, documentation packages and project support for overseas distributors and contractors.
