Hinges, Handles and Closers: Hardware Selection for Hospital Doors

The leaf gets the attention; the hardware takes the abuse. Hospital doors fail at hinges, handles and closers long before the panel gives up - so hardware specification is where durability is actually decided.

Hinges first. Hospital doors are heavy and opened thousands of times per week. Specify bearing hinges rated for the real leaf weight - remembering that lead-lined and glazed leaves weigh far more than standard - with 3D adjustability so installers can compensate for wall settlement without un-hanging the leaf.

Handles come in two families for medical use: lever handles for general wards, and elbow or pull designs for sterile and laboratory zones where hands stay occupied or gloved. Stainless steel (304 minimum) with satin finish survives daily disinfection; coated hardware discolors within a year on busy wards.

Locks and access: ward rooms typically need privacy sets with outside override for emergencies; controlled rooms need card-reader-compatible electric strikes; CSSD and pharmacy often need interlocks. The lockcase should accept these variants on the same door prep, so upgrades do not mean new doors.

Closers matter more for comfort than most specifiers expect. For patient areas choose closers with low opening resistance - accessibility guidance caps opening force - and adjustable closing speed so the latch engages without slamming. On fire-rated doors, the closer is part of the certified assembly: substitute nothing without checking the certificate.

Kick plates and trolley protection are cheap insurance at the leaf base wherever beds and carts pass. Stainless plates, fitted full-height where heavy traffic is expected, extend door life measurably.

Two buying rules close the guide: order hardware as part of the door set from one supplier, so compatibility and warranties are single-source; and standardize across the facility so maintenance stocks one set of spares, not eleven.
