Airtight Door Standards and Tests: What Importers Should Ask For
Almost every supplier of hospital doors describes their product as airtight or hermetic. For a distributor or contractor, the meaningful question is not whether the word appears in a brochure, but which test backs it up.
Airtightness is measured as air leakage through the closed door at a given pressure difference. Test reports should state the method, the pressure levels and the measured leakage area or flow rate. Without numbers, airtightness is a marketing term.
Ask how the test was performed: on a complete assembly - leaf, frame and hardware - or only on the leaf alone. A leaf that seals perfectly in a laboratory jig can leak badly in a frame with poor gaskets, so assembly-level results are what count.
Durability testing matters just as much. A hermetic door may pass a leakage test when new, but seals age. Cycle testing of the operator and seal compression tests after repeated closing give a picture of performance after years of hospital service.
Safety standards also apply. Automatic doors in public buildings are expected to meet recognized safety requirements for force limitation and reversal - typically verified through infrared sensors, safety edges and force measurement at the leading edge.
For fire-rated variants, request the test certificate for the complete assembly, including frame and hardware, and confirm which certification body issued it. The same applies to radiation shielding: attenuation type-test reports for the finished door, not just material certificates for the lead sheet.
A professional manufacturer will send sample reports before you ask twice. If a supplier cannot produce a single test document, that is itself a data point.
