A fire rating applies to a tested assembly - leaf, frame, hinges, closer, seals and glazing together. Swapping any element for a non-tested alternative can void the rating. This is why serious manufacturers supply doors and hardware as matched sets.

Ratings are expressed in minutes - commonly 60, 90 or 120 - determined by the building's compartmentation design. Evacuation corridors and stairwell doors usually carry specific rating requirements, while ordinary rooms may need only smoke control.

Glazing deserves special attention. Vision panels in fire doors must use fire-rated glass in tested sizes; an ordinary double-glazed panel is not interchangeable. Check the certificate's listed glazing sizes before agreeing to larger windows.

When comparing quotations, treat an un-certified door that 'meets the standard' as a different product from a certified assembly. The price gap reflects real testing costs, and hospitals increasingly verify.
