Why the Door Closer Is Part of the Fire Rating

A fire compartment is only as good as its weakest open door. The whole point of a fireproof steel door - holding flames back for 30 or 60 rated minutes - collapses if the leaf is left ajar at the moment it matters. That is why fire door requirements concentrate so hard on self-closing: the closer is not an accessory, it is the component that puts the wall back together after every single passage.

In hospital use this gets harder, not easier. Fire doors on corridors and ward entrances are the most-cycled doors in the building, pushed by staff, beds and trolleys around the clock. A closer that cannot keep up with that duty cycle - or that lets the door drift to half-latched - quietly cancels the rating the leaf earned in the furnace.

This door ships as a working set: the leaf and its CE-certified door closer are matched at the factory. The closer is selected for this leaf's weight and width, so closing speed, latch action and reliability are engineered together rather than combined by chance on site. Closing and latching cycles are adjustable, letting the swing stay comfortable for clinical traffic while the final latch action stays firm.

Delivering the set complete also removes a classic project failure: the right door hung with the wrong closer. Site teams receive leaf, frame, closer and ironmongery labeled against the door schedule, one package per opening.

Fireproof Steel Door Construction

The leaf is a steel construction rated to the compartment schedule - EI30 where the fire strategy demands 30 minutes of integrity and insulation, EI60 where it demands 60. The classification is decided position by position by your fire engineer; our job is to build each leaf to the rating written against it and to keep the evidence trail with the door.

On the visible face, the steel carries an HPL laminate from Formica®, colored to the project scheme. The laminate is non-porous and antibacterial, wiping down with the disinfectants already used in the facility - so the door that satisfies the fire strategy also satisfies the infection-control one.

Typical positions are the workhorse compartments of a medical building: stair enclosures and protected routes, corridor compartment doors, plant and service rooms, and the separations between fire zones. Fire performance is a system property: leaf, frame, closer and wall all play their part. Frames are fixed and packed plumb into the structural opening, leaves hung on the supplied hinges, and the closer commissioned at handover - closing speed and latch action set so the door is comfortable for staff but completes its cycle firmly.
