Hermetic vs Cleanroom vs Airtight Doors: What Is the Difference?
Search for hospital doors and you will meet the same product called hermetic, airtight and cleanroom - sometimes all three in one paragraph. The terms overlap but are not synonyms, and knowing the difference prevents over-specifying (paying twice) or under-specifying (failing commissioning).
Airtight is the base claim: the door resists air leakage through the closed assembly, verified by a leakage test. It is a performance statement. Any serious supplier backs it with a test report and a class, not an adjective.
Hermetic is the stronger, system-level version in everyday industry usage: a door engineered for very low leakage, with dedicated perimeter sealing, precision closing and - for sliding doors - rail solutions designed to seal the hardest edge, the top gap. In hospitals, "hermetic door" has become shorthand for the sealed sliding doors used in operating rooms and isolation suites.
Cleanroom describes the environment more than the door: cleanrooms control particle contamination, and their doors must not generate particles (flush surfaces, no exposed hardware cavities) while maintaining the room’s classification during use. A cleanroom door is airtight plus particle-discipline: easy-clean finishes, sealed vision panels, and compatibility with cleanroom wall systems.
In practice the overlap is real: an operating room is a cleanroom-class space, so its hermetic door is also a cleanroom door. The labels differ in emphasis - leakage performance, sealing engineering, contamination control - and a good specification simply demands all three explicitly.
Where it matters financially: a pharmaceutical cleanroom door in a welded stainless frame with ISO-class documentation costs more than a hospital hermetic door that meets the same leakage class. Order the environment you have, not the stricter label.
A quick translation table for tenders: airtight = leakage-tested assembly; hermetic = sealed-system door for pressure-controlled rooms; cleanroom = contamination-controlled compatibility. If a quotation uses the words without test references, ask which numbers stand behind them.
