Airtightness Classes for Medical Doors: Reading the Ratings

Airtightness ratings turn "this door seals well" into comparable numbers. The reference framework most test reports build on is EN 12207, which classes windows and doors by air permeability - the lower the leakage at a given test pressure, the better the class.

Physically, the test measures how much air passes through the closed door per meter of joint length, or per square meter, at stepped pressure differences. The resulting class is a property of the complete assembly: leaf, frame, gaskets, and - for sliding doors - the rail solution.

Why hospitals care: pressure regimes. Operating rooms hold positive pressure against corridors; isolation rooms hold negative pressure. Both regimes leak first through doors - an unclassed door can undo careful HVAC design every time it closes.

For sliding hermetic doors, the decisive details are the perimeter seal system (brush plus fin or dedicated hermetic gaskets) and the closing force that compresses it. That is why hermetic doors close onto a raised rail or with an active pull-in mechanism - the last millimeters of travel do the sealing.

Classes per room, as a practical guide: operating rooms and isolation rooms need the top airtightness performance the supplier can document; clean corridors and CSSD one step below; ward and office doors can trade sealing for cost and acoustics.

Read reports for three things: tested as an assembly (not leaf-only), tested at realistic pressure steps, and traceable to the shipped product - batch or serial marking. A class claim without a test route is marketing.

Also check cycle endurance of the seals. Gaskets age; ask how performance is verified after ten thousand or a hundred thousand cycles, which separates engineered systems from showroom sealing.

When comparing suppliers, ask each for the same evidence: assembly test report, leakage curve and seal maintenance interval. The answers sort manufacturers quickly.
