CSSD Door Selection: Steam, Dust and Trolley Traffic

The central sterile supply department is the hardest ordinary environment for a door in a hospital: wet decontamination rooms on one side, dust-controlled sterile stores on the other, and heavy trolleys passing between them all day. Door selection here is engineering, not decoration.

Decontamination zones run hot and humid. Doors and frames facing washers and autoclaves should be stainless steel or equivalently corrosion-resistant, with sealed edges that do not swell. Vision panels need double glazing to resist fogging and thermal stress.

Sterile storage is the opposite problem: the door must protect a dust-controlled, positive-pressure store from the corridor. Here airtight sealing with documented leakage class matters, plus smooth cleanable faces with no horizontal ledges that collect particles.

The traffic between them is trolley traffic - instrument carts, washer racks, transport bins. Bottom rails must tolerate wheel impact; recessed floor tracks protect the rail but need coordination with floor finishes; swing doors need kick plates and impact-rated edges at trolley height.

Interlocks are standard practice between contaminated and clean zones: doors on opposite sides of a pass-through should not open simultaneously. Specify controllers that support this interlock natively, and include audible or visual signaling for staff.

Glazing and observation: supervisors need sight lines along the workflow. Full or half-height glazed panels - double glazed, sealed - cost little at order time and remove endless door-opening later.

Maintenance access is the quiet winner: CSSD doors cycle constantly, so choose systems with replaceable seal cartridges, accessible rollers and spare-part availability. Downtime in sterile supply is a hospital-wide event.

Specify per zone - corrosion resistance in wash areas, airtight class in sterile stores, impact resistance everywhere - and order the zones as one matched package so frames, interlocks and finishes align.
