How to Measure Openings When Ordering Medical Doors

When a container of doors arrives and one leaf does not fit, the cause is almost always the same: the opening was measured once, in one place, three months earlier. Walls move; sites are rough. Measuring medical doors properly is a small discipline that saves weeks.

Measure the structural opening at three heights - top, middle, bottom - for width, and three positions for height. Use the smallest figure as the structural size, not the average. Out-of-plumb openings are normal; average measurements produce doors that bind on one side.

Record wall thickness at both jambs and the head. Hospital doors arrive with frames that must wrap the wall; a 12mm error in thickness means visible gaps or frames that will not seat. Where wall thickness varies along the run, note the range.

Check floor levels across the opening and note finished-floor heights on both sides - especially where corridor and room finishes differ. Threshold details, drop seals and recessed rails all depend on the real difference, not the drawing’s ambition.

Note what the walls are made of. Masonry, block, stud and cleanroom partition each take different frame fixings; the factory cannot prepare the right anchors - or lead-lined reveals - if it learns the wall type on installation day.

Photograph every opening with a tape measure visible, and sketch the room context: swing directions, adjacent doors, bed-clearance paths, and any service that competes for the frame zone - switches, oxygen outlets, handrails.

For retrofits, add the classic checks: does the new frame fit the old opening without cutting structure? Is there headroom above for a sliding rail? Where does the existing door swing, and should it?

Send measurements as a simple table - opening, wall type, thickness, floor notes, photo filenames - with the order. Factories build to what you send; make it complete, and doors fit the first time.
